Day 05 (Tuesday) Czechia

Prague, Czechia

Another hotel breakfast. Many of the same people were eating at the same time. They have a juice they call “multivitamin” which we also encountered in Munich which tastes similar to POG.

Since we did get a chance to make reservations to have a drink at the top pf the Dancing House (the online reservation system was breaking for me), we went up to see if we could do it in person. Once there, we took one selfie from inside and decided to not go back. We were heading for higher views anyway. We then headed across the river and up to the the statue installation, “for the survivors of Communism”, then on to the line to get a ticket for the funicular. The line was long and didn’t move and I started reading reviews on google that described it as a massive scam, so we ditched and walked up to the Petrin Tower. The hike up was steak and sweaty in the humidity, but getting to the top of the tower, we were rewarded with incredible views of Prague.

Once we got down, we took a winding path down through the section of town lined by embassies from various countries. We saw security check points with mirrors to search under vehicles. Apparently posing no threat, we continued down through the tourist areas to the Franz Kafka Museum and then on to Waldstein Garden and the dripping wall (getting to which, Google maps lead us all crazy wrong ways).

Sylvia stopped to try a Trdelnik, but it was stale from sitting out.Walked across the Charles Bridge, a tourist nightmare. It started to rain a bit, a hot drizzle for our walk back toward our hotel.

Once back in our neighborhood we had lunch at Gran Fierro, a recommendation from the hotel. I had one of each of the empanadas- beef, chorizo, duck, and Mozzarella, tomato & basil while Sylvia got grilled octopus. We also each had a delicious cocktail (seen below). The skies opened up and it rained fairly heavy while we were comfortably sitting in a greenhouse type covered semi-outdoor space. So glad we hadn’t been caught out in that. It stopped before we finished our meal. Perfect timing.

Back to the room to rest of a while. Another shower- the humidity makes us so sweaty all the time!

Went to Hemingway Bar for a 5pm reservation – had a Savory Habit and a Men at War, Sylvia had a Mistress and a Hemingway’s Garden. The waitress was from Slovakia and gave us some recommendations. We’ve decided to add Bratslava in Slovakia to our list of places to drive to tomorrow before Vienna.

Dinner at Lola – Vermut y Tapas. We ordered Pintxos, tapas on slices of bread. Tried one of each of the five types, then Alubias Blancas con Calamarcictos (squid in white beans) and Gambas al Ajillo (shrimps in garlic chili oil). I had a Rioja Sour to drink.

After dinner walk across the river (in the rain!) to the Nightmare bar. I had a terrible drink there (Cenobite’s Puzzle Box: whiskey, sweet and sour lemonade and Sprite) and Sylvia had a ginger ale.

Our walk from the Nightmare bar was gorgeous as the rain had cleared just around sunset.

Sylvia wanted a sweet snack before bed, so we went to Cafe Louvre and had a pavlova and pistachio cream puff.  I had a Ruby Port.

On our walk back, we passed the Spitfire Butterflies and noticed that, as well as being lit up at night, they animated.

Back to the hotel for our last night of sleep.
